Ever since I started using foundation I have never reached for anything else but my fingers to apply it. Curiosity sometimes gets the better of us and I suddenly felt very keen to try out a foundation brush. The Shiseido foundation brush is also referred to as “the secret weapon” by many. There are numerous reviews about its excellency, but there was no way I was going to let myself pay €40+ for a foundation brush as I wasn’t sure if I was going to continue using it after the first wave of excitement passed. Instead, I bought a foundation brush that was often compared to the one by Shiseido. Ebelin is a home brand by the German drugstore DM which specialises in beauty tools. For the most part, I enjoy using their products and didn’t find myself let down by many.
I paid €3,95 for Ebelin’s Make Up + Concealer brush at a DM store. Visually, it is similar to Shiseido’s brush. Functionally, I assume the difference lies in the bristles. While there are many bristles, they are packed too densly and I simply wasn’t able to find a way to use them efficiently. On my face, the flat top of the brush feels too rough and doesn’t bend easily under pressure, so applying make up with it becomes more of a struggle than a breeze. As visible in the photo, when wet, the bristles group together in a way that causes the application to become very streaky. Having to use fingers to blend out what the brush couldn’t proves that it wasn’t working for me. Even though I (thankfully) never had a reason to wear concealer, I would not recommend reaching for this brush to apply concealer. The flat top is too harsh for the delicate under eye area.
After numerous tries, we still haven’t found a way to work together, so I am sad to say that this brush is wasting time in my make up drawer and will need to find a new owner.
Have you tried Ebelin’s foundation brush? If you also own the famous Shiseido brush, how do they compare?
